March 2022: The Month to Celebrate Women | E&C
What does Women's Day in March represent?
Find out what International Women's Day, celebrated in March, represents: How did it come about? How do you celebrate it? Emma&Chloé explains. ✓
March is, of course, Women's Empowerment Month. For many years, this first month of spring has been marked by International Women's Day, a day on which men and women around the world fight for gender equality. But have you ever taken a closer look at the origins of this celebration?

1. March, Women's Commitment Month
For several years now, the month of March has been known for highlighting women. Far from being a purely commercial event, International Women's Day is a very important date, particularly in the context of the recognition of gender equality. Indeed, the objective of this event is above all to denounce all inequalities and discrimination between men and women and to fight worldwide for a more egalitarian future, but it is also an opportunity to celebrate the advances in women's rights. This day of action and awareness allows everyone to reflect and discuss the place of women in society and to mobilize through new initiatives...
2. What is the origin of March 8?

The origins of “International Women's Day” lie in Woman's Day in the United States. The first International Women's Day took place in the 20th century, on February 28, 1909, in that same country, to demonstrate for women's right to vote. This demonstration was organized by the National Women's Committee of the American Socialist Party. But that's not all! The true origins of March 8 are also marked by Women's Day in Europe. It was in 1910, during the Second International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen, that the president of the International Secretariat of Socialist Women, the German Clara Zetkin, proposed establishing a Women's Day to be celebrated annually. The goal of this day would undoubtedly be to demonstrate by creating a movement to obtain women's right to vote. The delegates from the 17 countries present subsequently adopted this proposal. Gradually, many countries such as Germany, Austria, and Denmark began organizing rallies to celebrate International Women's Day, in which millions of women and men have since participated. It was also in Russia that many women had been gathering for years, notably in 1917, to demand bread and the return of their husbands from the war. This event marked a turning point in International Women's Day, particularly because it took place on the last Sunday of February according to the calendar in use in Russia, which corresponds to March 8th in the modern Gregorian calendar. It was then that in 1921, Russian President Lenin designated March 8th as Women's Day, and this made history. For over 100 years now, the tradition has remained, and International Women's Day takes place every year, on March 8th in France but also around the world. During this day, many men and women demonstrate in the streets at national and global levels in order to change the position of women in the world of work, in their personal lives... in particular in order to make the government and politicians react.

3. How can I get involved?
March is therefore the ideal month to get involved in women's rights. But what can you do to get involved?
1. Educate yourself on the subject!
Before committing to anything, it's essential to educate yourself on the topic. The more mature your thinking, the better you'll be able to understand and explain the issues that arise from this quest for gender equality.
If you're a book lover, bookstores and libraries have plenty of books on the subject, from essays to comics. Examples include Stéphanie Duval's book on gender equality and Mona Chollet's "Witches: The Undefeated Power of Women." You can also find books by historical figures like Simone de Beauvoir.

If reading isn't your cup of tea, listen to podcasts or watch videos! The internet is full of platforms where you can find information quickly and easily. Our favorite podcasts are "Un podcast à soi" (A podcast of one's own) offered by Arte Radio every first Wednesday of the month to address issues of gender and equality between men and women, and "YESS" a warrior podcast, which looks back every month at the victories of ordinary women against sexist injunctions and violence.
2. Take the time to make a concrete commitment!
If you want to get more involved, there are of course missions and actions that will meet your expectations.
For example, from your couch, you can share posts from women's rights activist accounts like @camilleetjustine or even publish your own thoughts and reflections on the issue.

If you want action, you should definitely get out there and get involved! Participate in demonstrations, contact organizations, and do your part.
3. What if your schedule doesn't work out? Don't panic, you can always get involved by donating money, clothes in good condition, or new hygiene products to charities. The Bulles Solidaires association, for example, collects personal hygiene products and distributes them to people in precarious situations.

As you can see, the topic of women's rights is vast, but it deserves to be studied. And, as a reminder, the fight for women's rights is not just for women! Everyone, regardless of gender, is free to get involved <3
